Wirrulnga – Ningura Napurrula

Ningura was born around 1938 at Watulka – South of the Kiwirrkurra Community – West of Alice Springs. She later moved to Papunya with her husband Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi where she painted the background to his artworks.

Around 1996 she began painting on her own. Her first solo exhibition was in 2000.

This work shows rondels depicting the site of Wirrulnga, a rock hole site in a small rocky outcrop east of Kiwirrkura Community in Western Australia. Whilst at Wirrulgna the women also spun hair into string to make “Nyimparra” – hair string skirts which are worn at ceremonies.
